A device for safeguarding friction clutches (8) against overloading determines a relative rotational speed ( DELTA N) and a torque (T), forms from these a friction power (T. DELTA N = P) and its time integral (@Pdt=Q), that is a value for friction work (Q), compares the friction work (Q) to a limiting value (QS), if required emits an alarm signal (O/L) and thereby ends a slipping process. This prevents critical temperatures in rotating friction faces even though these temperatures cannot be recorded directly. <IMAGE>
