A washing machine comprising a control system for controlling the amount of water in a collecting well (5) adapted to be filled via a supply conduit (6) provided with a supply valve (13) which is opened during a water supply phase. A circulation pump (9) for circulating the water collected in the collecting well is operated during the supply phase. The collecting well (5) communicates with a control chamber (14) via an overflow wall (12) provided with a calibrated opening (10) communicating with the intake (8) of the pump. A pressure switch (16) or the like causes the supply valve to close when the water overflows from the collecting well (5) into the control chamber (14) at a rate at least equal to the flow rate through the calibrated opening (10).
