A speculum 10 comprises a fixed blade 11 and a movable blade 13, both of which are formed of a transparent, rigid plastics material, the movable blade 13 being pivotally mounted on a slide 12 mounted on a hollow post 15, a first adjustable retaining means for holding the slide at a selected position along the post 15; a lever 35 projecting from the movable blade 13, and a second adjustable retaining means for holding this lever in one of a plurality of angular positions. The fixed blade 11 includes a light guide 17 for conducting light from a light source handle 50 remote from the patient-contacting portions of the speculum and directing it to the distal ends of the blades. The slide 12 includes a forked end having holes 24 in which outwardly projecting pins 34 on the movable blade 13 engage. The first adjustable retaining means comprises ratchet teeth 28 on the post 15 and a pawl 25 mounted on the slide 12 and the second adjustable retaining means comprises ratchet teeth 32 on a tongue 30 on the slide and a bevelled edge 40 on the lever 35; the pawl 25 and the tongue 30 being biassed, due to the resiliency of the plastic material from which they are formed, towards the teeth 28 and the bevelled edge 40 respectively. The blades are trough shaped and define a throat therebetween. The lever 35 comprises two arms (37 Fig. 9) projecting from a respective side of the proximal end 36 of the movable blade 13, extending either side of a throat opening (38 Fig. 9) in the lever 35 at the proximal ends of the blades and joined at the end of the opening (38) by a yoke portion (39, Fig. 9) on which is formed the bevelled edge 40. Members 11, 12 and 13 are disposable. |
