PURPOSE:To obtain an etherified cyclodextrin inexpensively in high yields, by effecting the reaction in two stages by using aqueous alkali solution/organic solvent mixture in etherifying a cyclodextrin with an alkylating agent. CONSTITUTION:A cyclodextrin is added to an aqueous alkali solution/organic solvent mixture (e.g., aqueous sodium hydroxide solution/chloroform mixture). An etherifying agent (e.g., dimethyl sulfate) is added to the reaction system and reacted to effect partial etherification of the cyclodextrin. The obtained partially etheirified cyclodextrin is further reacted with an alkylating agent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g., tetrabutylammonium iodide) in the aqueous alkali solution/organic solvent mixture to obtain the purpose etherified cyclodextrin.
