Desulphurization is effected in the presence of a catalyst containing oxides of metals of Groups IIa, VIb and VIII of the Periodic Table but substantially no alkali metal compound which is made by mixing with a dry powdered acidic oxide of a metal of Group VIb (e.g. MoO3 or WO3) or a precursor therefor a dry powdered solid optionally hydrated but not dead burnt acidic or amphoteric oxide and an oxide of a metal of Group IIa (e.g. MgO) or a precursor therefor, the latter being added dry or wet and, if wet, added after the two previously mentioned ingredients have been mixed dry, adding wet or dry a salt of a base metal of Group VIII (Ni and Co are specified) and adjusting if necessary the composition to a shapeable consistency. Examples describe the desulphurization of (1) a light petroleum distillate (boiling point 40-170 DEG C.); and (2) naphtha of similar boiling point.ALSO:A method of producing a hydrocarbon conversion catalyst containing oxides of metals of Group II A, VI B and VIII of the Periodic Table but substantially no alkali metal compound, comprises mixing with a dry powdered acidic oxide of a metal of group VI B (e.g. MoO3 or WO3) or a precursor therefor a dry powdered solid optionally hydrated but not dead burnt acidic or amphoteric oxide and an oxide of a metal of Group II A (e.g. MgO) on a precursor therefor, the latter being added dry or wet and, if wet, added after the two previously mentioned ingredients have been mixed dry, adding wet or dry a salt of a base metal of Group VIII (Ni and Co are specified) of the Periodic Table and adjusting if necessary the composition to a shapeable consistency. Additionally the catalyst may contain a water-soluble polymer (e.g. a cellulose derivative or starch) or a water swellable clay e.g. bentonite. The catalysts may be reduced and/or sulphided before use. |
