PURPOSE:To prevent a read error by reading a same bar signal for several times with different photoelectric conversion elements. CONSTITUTION:While changing the x-coordinate of an image sensor 1 against bar signal 3a and 3b relatively on locus of reading positions, the sensor is moved simultaneously in the direction of y-coordinate. if the bar signal 3a is reread in a second read line B-B after it is read by a photoelectric conversion element 2a in a given read line A-A on a locus T1, the element 2a reads a bar signal 3b because the one-dimensional image sensor 1 moved in the direction of x- coordinate. Since the relative position in the direction of y-coordinate also moved, the bar signal 3b is read at a position which is a different position from the one where it was read by another photoelectric conversion element 2b in the read line A-A.
