PURPOSE:To realize the most suitable positioning of inputted character with a bad quality such as omission of a part of the letter, by comparing the size of standard pattern and unidentified pattern and by determining the movement direction and movement volume of the unidentified pattern. CONSTITUTION:Movement direction and volume determination 42 gets hight H and width W information of the standard pattern, and detects the necessary volume of movement of the inputted pattern 22 as follows. Namely, given that H=Hs-Hi. W=Ws-Wi, and when a1=H=a2, b1=W=b2 (a1, a2, b1, b2 are threshold value) are satisfied, movement is done by H/2 to up/down direction and W/2 direction to left/right direction. After the movement, matching and correction calculation 44 makes matching at five position, namely four position (up, down, left, right) and center, and the maximum similarity obtained at a certain position is defined at the similarity of the pattern against the standard pattern.
