PURPOSE:To the head sticking or clogging phenomenon with a magnetic recording medium containing a ferromagnetic and metallic thin film layer containing mainly Co formed on a flexible substrate, by securing a specific relation among the gap length of a magnetic head, number of projections of the surface of the medium, the height of these projections and the coercive force. CONSTITUTION:For a magnetic recording medium containing a ferromagnetic and metallic thin film layer, projections of average >=10<5>/a<2> pieces per 1mm<2> of the medium surface with their heights 30-300Angstrom . Furthermore the coersive force is measured on a plane based on the lengthwise direction of a substrate and the normal line of the substrate surface with variation of directions as (Hc max - Hc min)/Hc(0)<=0.9, where Hc max, Hc min and Hc(0) are the maximum value of the coercive force, the minimum value of said coercive force and the lengthwise coercive force of the substrate respectively. The ferromagnetic and metallic thin film layer can use existing various compositions of Co, Co-Cr, Co-Ti, etc. with a vapor deposition process, an ion plating process, etc. The highest effect is secured in this case when Co is used mainly with addition of a magnetic layer having a composition containing 1-3 elements of Ni, Cr and O when necessary.
