PURPOSE:In the process where hydrochloric acid is added to aqueous alkali chlorate to decompose into ClO2 and Cl2, the resultant mixed gas is further mixed with Cl2 and heated to decompose the ClO2 remaining in the mixed gas whereby pure Cl2 is obtained. CONSTITUTION:The saline solution coming back from the electrolysis tank is fed to the dechlorate tank 1 and hydrochloric acid is fed into the tank to decompose NaClO3 in the aqueous solution. The saline from the tank 1 is fed from the top into the deaeration column 2 in order to remove ClO2 and Cl2 gas is fed from the inlet 24. The saline solution passes through the packed column 23 is circulated through pipe 16 into the saline line. Make-up Cl2 gas and the exhaust gas mainly containing Cl2 from the column 2 are fed from inlet 22 into the tank 1. In the meantime, the Cl2 gas formed in the tank 1 and containing ClO2 is adjusted in its ClO2/Cl2 ratio to a prescribed value, passed through the water-sealing tank 3 into the decomposition tank 4 where ClO2 is decomposed into Cl2 and O2. The gas formed in the tank 4 is cooled in the column 5, then separated into Cl2, O2 and the Cl2 gas is recovered.
