The chain drive tensioner has a piston (29) thrust by pressure in a housing (13) against the chain in the transverse direction. The piston is fixed to a central axial rod (32), around which are locking bodies (39) with an axial spring (35) working on them. This wedges them between a seat (37) in the housing and the rod. The rod is locked in the housing so that it cannot retract, but can move in the opposite direction, as the piston moves out of the housing. Thus the piston cannot move back inwards and tension is maintained when the drive stops. On restarting, the chain is at the correct tension. |
