The ingot casting rate is continuously monitored and the flow rate of the molten Li stream is adjusted in order to maintain a predetermined Li concn. in the alloy. The molten Li is introduced beneath the surface of an agitated source of molten Al whilst an inert gas is bubbled through the mixt. - In a similar method the molten Al-Li mixt. is subjected to high shear forces to thoroughly mix the two metals ensuring uniform concn. of Li in the alloy. Ar and Cl gases are bubbled through the alloy to remove impurities such as hydrogen and the alloy is continuously cast.
