In a handbrake valve, especially for motor vehicles, the rocker lever (1) is provided with a shift rod (7), connected to a control element (5) for the valve mechanism and fixed in an axial direction but capable of swivelling in a rotational direction, which outside a shifting gate (3), arranged on the valve housing, of the handbrake valve is enclosed by a shift sleeve (11) connected to the gear shift knob (9); the shift sleeve (11) in turn carries a relatively displaceable ratchet element (13), which in the area of a gate opening (37) of the shifting gate (3) can be shifted into a detent position inside the gate opening under the action of a detent spring (17), without forces acting on the gear shift knob (9) during operation of the rocker lever being able to exert a locking or retarding influence on the detent movement. Starting from the parking brake position in the gate opening (37) of the shifting gate (3), the ratchet element (13), by means of the shift sleeve (11), can be pressed by a further degree in the direction of the control element (5) of the handbrake valve if the rocker lever is to be swivelled out of the parking brake position into the control position. In addition the ratchet element (13), by means of the shift sleeve, can be raised radially outwards in the direction away from the control element (5) if the rocker lever is to be unlocked from the parking brake position and swivelled back into the release or drive position. <IMAGE>
