<p>In a socket weld connection between a tubular element and a vessel the element is received in a recess in the vessel which has a tapered seat. The tapering is effected from the outer circumference of the bored recess inwardly at a downward angle w.r.t. the horizontal of at least 10 deg. and not more than 15 deg.. Used for forming a socket weld connection between a pipe, nipple or a nozzle and a pipe, drum, header or a tube sheet of a heat exchanger. Tapering of the recess seat provides rim contact at the seat to allow free deformation of the tubular element and avoid stress development in the weld when it contracts. There is no need to machine a thin rim on the end of the tubular element. The line contact between the end face of the element and the tapered seat is sufficient contact to ensure accurate positioning of the element.</p> |
