A centreless grinder comprises a machine bed 1, a grinding-wheel 6 rotatably mounted in a headstock 2, a regulating wheel 7 rotatably mounted in a headstock 3, which is mounted directly or indirectly on the bed 1 for sliding movement toward or away from the wheel 6, a workpiece holder 4 mounted directly or indirectly on the bed 1, and means operative during grinding for driving across the bed 1 in a controlled manner and at a predetermined rate the headstock 3 and either the headstock 2 or the holder 4 in such a manner as to cause relative movement between both the wheel 6 and holder 4, and between holder 4 and wheel 7, so as to cause the axis of the workpiece 8 to shift progressively relative to the holder 4 towards the wheel 6 during grinding and thus prevent the wheel 6 from coming into contact with the holder 4. In the embodiment shown, the holder 4 is fixed and during grinding the headstock 2 is advanced by a drive 20 and the headstock 3 by an adjuster drive arrangement 21 similar to the drive 20 or by a drive arrangement linked to the drive 20 by an adjuster train 22. In other embodiments the housing 2 is fixed on the bed 1 and either the housing 3 or the holder 4 is slidably mounted on the bed 1 with the holder 4 or the housing 3, respectively slidably mounted thereon. Drive arrangements are provided for causing the relative movement between the wheel 7 and holder 4. The holder 4 may be kept stationary or moved toward or away from the grinding-wheel during grinding, the regulating wheel 7 being moved toward the grinding-wheel in all cases.</p> |
