A method for preparing a benzoquinone represented by the general formula: <IMAGE> (I) where each of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group, which comprises reacting a phenol represented by the general formula: <IMAGE> (II) where R1, R2+L, R3 and R4 are as defined above, with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst. |
