PURPOSE:To produce a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of a steroid, from an easily available raw material, economically, by oxidizing a terminal olefin group of a compound corresponding to the objective compound to methyl ketone in the presence of a palladium and copper catalyst and water. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> is H or lower alkyl; Y is protected OH) is oxidized in the presence of a palladium and copper catalyst and water to obtain the objective compound of formula II useful as an intermediate of various steroids such as 19-nor-testosterone-type steroid, estrone-type steroid, 9.11-dehydro-testosterone-type steroid, etc. in high yield. The starting compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula III producible easily from butadiene with the compound of formula IV (R<3> is lower alkyl), removing the ester group from the resultant compound of formula V, and cyclizing the resultant compound of formula VI. |
