N-mono-and n,n'-bis-hydroxy alkyl piperaines - prodn using inert polar solvents

High yields of pure N-mono- and N,N'-bis-hydroxyalkylpiperazines for use as pharmaceutical intermediates are obtained by reacting piperazine with alkylene oxides, esp ethylene oxide in inert polar solvents, b.p. 130-170 degrees at ordinary pressure (an alcohol, an ether or ether alcohol e.g. ethylene-glycol-mono-n-propylether, or an ester e.g. isoamylacetate), and dissolving at least 5 w/% piperazine at 50 degrees. Slightly raised pressures and temp. of 80-120 degrees are favoured. No catalysts are required.
