Prepn. of doped silica glass

Doped SiO2 glass is obtd. by: forming a sol soln. by mixing a hydrolysed soln. and a soln. contg. ultrafine SiO2 particles; gelling; drying; and sintering, dopant being added at any stage. dopant is pref. a metal alkoxide, specifically tetraalkoxy-Ge. Hydrolysed soln. is pref. an alkylsilicate soln. and the pH of the sol is adjusted with a base, pref. NH4OH or organic base.
