Pentachloro-benzene is reacted with excess CHCl3 in presence of AlCl3, in a dry atmos. at between ambient temp. and 200 deg.C for over 30 minutes, to obtain cpds. of formula ArCHCl2, Ar2CHCl or Ar3CH, in which Ar is a highly-chlorinated aromatic gp., depending on the CHCl3/PCB ratio used.
