The VTR tape capstan has two recording and reproducing heads on opposite sides for respective half-image signal sections. Spaced between them are two auxiliary heads, used for tape editing. The system includes a pause control, and blocking devices for interrupting the video signals to the two main heads when signals to one of the head are interrupted. When to the pause signal is applied, the tape is reversed for a certain period of time, then advanced. A release stage cancels the blocking devices so that both main heads are operated again, and the two sets of signals are again synchronized with previous signals.
