<p>The present invention relates to compounds of the formula <CHEM> wherein A is a residual group obtained by removing one hydrogen atom from the alpha-amino group in an alpha-amino acid (excluding arginine) or a lower alkyl ester thereof; R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, or a salt thereof, and to a process for the preparation of these compounds. The compounds are capable of inhibiting the action of angiotensin converting enzyme and can therefore be used as anti-hypertensive agents.</p>
