The device comprises a body (12) formed of insulation material, the body being adapted for siting on the surface of a body of water and having an aperture (14) providing access to the surface of the body of water within the confines of said body, and a closure lid (20) removably located in said body for covering said aperture (14), the lid (20) when in position defining a gas chamber (30) with the walls (16) of the body forming the aperture, said chamber (30) being vented to atmosphere. In the described embodiment, the lid (20) is supported on pegs (18) and is arrranged so as to define a venting gap between its periphery and the aperture walls (16). The body material is preferably capable of floating on the water surface and may be, for example, expanded polystyrene.
