In the first compartment 1a being connected to a continuous source of breathing gas 4 which fills this compartment during a patients expiratory phase, and the second compartment 1b being connected to a periodically operated source of driving gas 9 which fills this compartment and hence expels a dose of breathing gas 7 via a conduit 7 during a patient's inspiratory phase, a valve 11 between the two compartments reducing the pressure in the first compartment to atmosphere via the inlet conduit 8 of the second compartment should this pressure exceed that in the second compartment. In a modification Fig. 2 the pressure is relieved direct to atmosphere via a conduit 13. |
