The finishing machine for artificial stone or concrete slabs has a belt conveyor which advances the unfinished slabs towards two successive grinding stations. Grinding heads are raised and lowered vertically onto the surface to be ground as the slabs pass underneath. At the delivery end of the conveyor is an aligning and positioning mechanism with sliding members which are moved horizontally inwards against the sides of the slabs. They are then pushed onto horizontal slide rails under the first grinding head, and are then advanced between feed rollers and on conveying rollers past the second grinding head.
