The illumination system (10), which is intended to illuminate goods on offer in shop counters, shop windows and on shop shelves or in a similar way, has an elongated, channel-like housing (20) which can be fitted with a tubular fluorescent lamp (12) and is opened downwards for the purpose of radiating light. At least one of the side walls (24) of the housing (20) is specially made overall from a transparent or diffusely translucent material and fastened to the opaque upper covering wall (26) of the housing (20). The transparent or translucent side wall (24) has holders for slides or displays which can be transilluminated by the light radiated from the lamp (12) inserted in the housing (20). <IMAGE>
