An electrical on/off switch is described having one or more pairs of contact pieces (8, 9) whose contact pieces for opening and closing the switch can move relative to one another and of which in each case one contact piece (9) consists of two sections (9a, 9b) which are arranged one behind the other in the movement direction (6) and of which the one is formed from a contact material having a high electrical conductivity while, in contrast, the other is formed from a composite material which contains both a contact material having high electrical conductivity and substances which are favourable for extinguishing the switching arcs. The switch is constructed as a rotary switch which supports the one or more movable contact pieces (9), at a distance from the switching shaft (5), on a rotor (7) and supports the one or more stationary contact pieces (8), at a corresponding distance from the switching shaft (5), on a stator (1). The switch has a directional lock which allows the rotor (7) to rotate only in one direction (6). In the contact pieces (9) which consist of two different sections (9a, 9b), their sequence with respect to the predetermined rotation direction (6) of the rotor (7) is selected such that switching on always [lacuna] by making contact between contact sections (8, 9a) having high electrical conductivity, and switching off always [lacuna] by contact separation of a [lacuna] consisting of the composite material ...
