In sailing boats, capsizing is prevented by the bottom end of the sail mast being formed by a safety restoring device which can bend in the face of excessive sail pressure. This safety restoring device, for example a helical spring of appropriate dimensions, ensures that, after the sail mast bends, it automatically swings back into its original position when the sail pressure abates. In the case of windsurfers, an appropriately engageable safety restoring device can be created by several spring bodies being attached all around the joint arranged at the bottom end of the sail mast. If the sail mast accordingly bends too far, the spring bodies automatically engage and then effectively make it easier to haul the sail mast in again. <IMAGE>
