Alkaline precipitating agent for removing phosphates and/or organically bonded phosphorous from effluent comprises a mixture of 10-90 pts. wt. calcium oxide and 10-90 pts. wt. iron (II) sulphate. Iron (II) sulphate monohydrate (FeSO4.H2O) is preferably used. Addition of the mixture results in the effluent having a weakly acidic pH, preferably 7-9. The amount of mixture added is 80-160 mg/l. Standard flocking agent can also be added to the effluent.
