In order to keep the axes of workpiece parts (1, 2) aligned during friction welding of the latter, it was recognised according to the invention that the fixed workpiece (2) must not be rigidly held in the clamping stock (8), for said clamping stock (8) would then elastically rebound under the axial frictional and compressive force and bring the axis of the workpiece (2) held therein out of alignment. If on the other hand the clamping jaws (9) holding the workpiece (2) are arranged capable of lateral and reverse movement in the clamping stock (8), parallel to the axis of rotation (5) of the friction welding machine, then no force can effectively act to bring the axes of the workpieces (1, 2) out of alignment. Smooth-running sliding or rolling bearings (14) or hydrostatic bearings (23) in conjunction with rotational locking means (27) are provided between the clamping jaws (9) and the clamping jaw holder (11). <IMAGE>
