PURPOSE:To hinder practically the penetration of hydrogen into a Ti material and to prevent the embrittlement of the Ti material due to the absorption of hydrogen when the Ti material is cogged, by filling a soaking pit with an oxidizing atmosphere having a specified concn. of oxygen or above and by heating the Ti material at a prescribed temp. range in the pit. CONSTITUTION:The soaking pit is filled with an oxidizing atmosphere having >=3% concn. of oxygen, and the ingot of the Ti material is heated at 600-990 deg.C in the pit and rolled to obtain the slab of the Ti material while preventing embrittlement due to the absorption of hydrogen. The partial pressure of hydrogen in the heating atmosphere is reduced by increasing the concn. of oxygen during heating in the soaking pit, so the percentage of H2O produced in the pit is reduced to suppress the absorption of hydrogen in the ingot. Since an oxide film is formed on the surface of the Ti material by increasing the concn. of oxygen, the penetration of hydrogen into the Ti material is effectively inhibited.
