PURPOSE:T obtain the titled compound excellent in heat resistance, flexibility, impact resistance and elongation-modulus balance, by reacting a specified diglycidyl ether with a bisphenol. CONSTITUTION:A bisphenol (A) of formula I [wherein Ar is group of formula II(wherein R2-3 are each H or methoxy) or a like group] is obtained by heating 2mol of mixture comprising 5-95mol% 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and 95-5mol% 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde with 1mol of pentaerythritol at 40-200 deg.C in the presence of an acidic catalyst to effect condensation. A diglycidyl ether (B) of formula III (wherein R1 is H or CH3 and is 0-1) is obtained by ring-closing, by treatment with NaOH, a halohydrin ether obtained by reacting component A with a (beta-methyl)-epihalohydrin in the presence of NaOH. One equivalent of component B is reacted with 0.01-1.0 equivalent of component A at 80-230 deg.C for 0.1-10hr in the presence of a catalyst (e.g., quaternary ammonium salt) to obtain the titled compound of formula IV (wherein n is 0-20).
