PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viewing information calculation method with less cost and load on viewers, with which the program reception state of many viewers can be grasped accurately. SOLUTION: A control section 20 detects reception history by a reception section 12 and records the detected history to a reception history memory 35. The reception history includes at least a received channel, a reception start time, and a reception end time. A viewer connects a receiver 1 to a conventional computer 2 periodically once a week, to enable the conventional computer 2 to transmit the reception history data recorded in the reception history memory 35 to a party calculating view information on a communication network 4, such as the Internet through a telephone line 3, together with a receiver ID written in a ROM 23. The party calculating the view information captures the reception history data and the receiver ID from the communication network 4 to calculate viewing information, such as program audience rating. In place of provision of the reception history memory 35 and a computer interface 36 to the receiver 1, the receiver 1 may use a removable storage device having a computer interface.
