PURPOSE:To use alumina prepared by firing aluminum hydroxide obtained by hydrolyzing an aluminum alkoxide as a catalyst in obtaining the titled substance by reacting phenol with an olefin in the liquid phase. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with an olefin, preferably secondary olefin in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst to give the titled substance. In the process, aluminum hydroxide obtained by hydrolyzing an aluminum alkoxide, and firing the resultant aluminum hydroxide at 400-1,000 deg.C, preferably 500- 700 deg.C for 0.1-20hr is used as the catalyst. The amount of the catalyst to be used is 0.001-0.3 times that of the phenol, and the reaction conditions are preferably 180-300 deg.Cunder 2-50kg/cm<2> pressure for 0.5-50hr. The moisture concentration is preferably <=1,000ppm. EFFECT:The catalyst has high activity, and the yield of the aimed substance is high. USE:An antioxidant, stabilizer and an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and dyes. |
