PURPOSE:To obtain a simple reader with high accuracy whose reading width is variable by setting a position of a moving index of a hand scanner provided to a part close to an original face to read and record only the picture information within a predetermined reading width. CONSTITUTION:A main body of a hand scanner is placed so that a slit 13 comes to a white part of an original and the reading width is set to an optional size by moving a marker 9. A read width detecting circuit 22 detects the reading range based on an output from a photoelectric converting means and generates an output representing the reading range. A reading width adjusting circuit 23 limits an output from the reading range based on the output of the circuit 22 and gives it to a recording means 26. The accurate reading width is detected and controlled with simple constitution in this way.
