2-Nicotinamide ethyl nitrate, known pharmacologically as Nicorandil is obtained by (a) oxidising 3-picoline with KMnO4 to nicotinic acid at around 70 deg.C; (b) reacting this with thionyl chloride; (c) converting the nicotinic acid chloride to an amide by reaction with etaethanolamine; and (d) treating with a mixt. of nitric and sulphuric acid to obtain the nitrate, with overall yields of 85%.
