PURPOSE:A polyether amide having improved heat resistance, flame retardance, and solvent resistance, and high mechanical strength, obtained by reacting a dihalide with specific two phenolic metal salts, reacting the reaction product with a phthalic acid dihalide, treating the resultant compound with water. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal salt of dihydric phenol shown by the formula MO-Ar-OM (Ar is group shown by the formula I -formula III, etc.; Q is 1-13C bifunctional hydrocarbon; Q is alkali metal) is reacted with a dihalide shown by the formula IV (R is -SO2-, or -CO-; X is halogen), and an alkali metal salt of an aminophenol shown by the formula V in a solvent to give an oligomer shown by the formula VI (n is 1-50), which is reacted with a phthalic acid dihalide in a solvent, and the reaction product is treated with water and an alcohol, to give a polyether amide having a repeating unit shown by the formula VII, terminal groups of -H, group shown by the formula VIII, etc., and >=0.3dl/g reduced viscosity in 0.2g/dl concentration N-methylpyrrolidone at 30 deg.C.
