<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for perfumes and amino acids such as tryptophan, etc. in high yield, by catalytically reacting anilines with ethylene glycol using a catalyst containing a lanthanum compound such as lanthanum sulfate. CONSTITUTION:Anilines (example; p-aminophenol, etc.) and ethylene glycol are catalytically reacted in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst containing a lanthanum compound (especially preferred examples; lanthanum sulfate, lanthanum bromide and lanthanum chloride) to obtain indoles (example; 5- hydroxyindole, etc.). Ethylene glycol and anilines are effectively utilized in this process and an industrially useful by-product is obtained. USE:A raw material for high polymer stabilizers, etc. and a raw material for dyes, organic rubber chemicals, medicines, etc.</p> |
