PURPOSE:To utilize effectively a filter medium by forming a water purification cartridge in multistages and exchanging the cartridge which is functionally deteriorated. CONSTITUTION:A filtration chamber 20 contg. an inflow passage, an activated carbon filter medium 18, and a filter 19 is provided to water purification cartridges 6A and 6B. When water is purified, the water to be treated flowing in from a changeover passage 9 is passed through inflow passages 17 and 17 and filtration chambers 20 and 20, and discharged from a purified water port 11. When the capacity of the cartridge 6A is reduced, the cartridge is exchanged for the cartridge 6B which is still working, and the water purification cartridge on the downstream side is replaced with a new water purification cartridge. Accordingly, the capacity of the cartridge 6B can be sufficiently utilized. The apparatus is used economically in this way, and the water purification cartridge can be used for many hours.
