In a sealing ring, a gap 7 is formed in an outer contact piece 8, which gap faces in towards the inside of the socket, an inner sealing tongue 9 also being formed, which bears against the spigot end 2 which is to form part of the pipe joint. The sealing ring comprises a holding region 5 which faces towards the outside of the socket and which has an internal diameter which is greater than the maximum external diameter of the spigot end 2. The sealing ring also comprises a sealing region 6 which faces in towards the inside of the socket and which has an internal diameter which is smaller than the external diameter of the spigot end 2 over an extent which is longer than the entire length of the gap 7. <IMAGE>
