PURPOSE:To hold the sharpness degree of a printing degree, by a method wherein the kind of input recording information is discriminated and a shadow circuit is operated when said information is character one or figure one to use shadow system. CONSTITUTION:Discrimination for generating or not generating a shadow signal S48 is performed by various gates 220-225 for alternately inputting data of line memories 213, 214, three flip-flops 226-228 and the gate 231 in the output side thereof. The flip-flop 227 contributes to the discrimination of a shadow based on the change in the level of a lateral direction (line direction) and the flip-flop 228 contributes to the discrimination of a shadow based on the change in a longitudinal direction (vertical direction). When a shadow is imparted, it is pref. to use this system only when character information is handled. By this mechanism, printing quality can be enhanced. Especially, the blur of a line caused by the lowering in the printing density of an one-dot line being the defect of a conventional recording system by binary value beam intensity at the time of high density beam recording.
