PURPOSE:The titled agent for inhibiting only growth of leaves and stalks without almost damaging growth of roots of plant, having sound safety, comprising an aromatic compound such as safrole, muristin, etc. having an aromatic ring to which a methylene dioxide group is bonded as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A plant growth inhibitor comprising an aromatic compound containing an aromatic group to which a methylene oxide group is bonded, especially a compound shown by the formula I (R<1>-R<4> are H, or monofunctional organic group except aldehyde group) (e.g., apiole shown by the formula II, croweasin shown by the formula III, etc.) as an active ingredient. The aromatic compound is easily obtainable, a small amount of it shows excellently physiological activity, the aromatic compound is a constituent component of a purified oil of edible plant and safe. A solution of the aromatic compound or its preparation is applied to plants.
