A multiplicity of switchboard positions is provided in a telephone switching system, a call memory being provided at a central point for each call type per switchboard position in which the calls are stored in the order in which they arrive. Moreover, a further memory is provided for each call type in the switchboard position in which the call data contained in the call memory are likewise stored. As soon as this memory contains a number of calls which exceeds a pre-defined number, a congestion signal is generated at the switchboard position for the call type concerned to prompt the switchboard position operator to deal with the queued calls more quickly.
