PURPOSE:To obtain an aminophenol useful as a medicine, agricultural chemical, etc. in high yield, by reacting a dihydric phenol with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a novel compound metal oxide containing molybdenum as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A dihydric phenol, e.g. resorcinol, is aminated with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a compound metal oxide, obtained by reacting a molybdenum compound selected from salts of molybdic acids, molybdic acids and molybdenum oxide with a metal compound selected from oxides, hydroxides and salts of metals other than molybdenum under heating at a high temperature as a catalyst to give an aminophenol. The use of the above-mentioned catalyst provides the aminophenol in high selectivity, and the catalyst can be easily separated and recovered after completing the reaction. |
