PURPOSE:To attain efficient use of an ink ribbon by reading a monochroic picture data from a picture memory in response to plural ink colors on the ink ribbon. CONSTITUTION:A color picture signal from a picture input section 1 is subject to AD conversion, then separated into yellow, magenta, cyan and black signals, which are stored in picture memories 5a-5d. A recording paper sheet 10 is adhered to a thermal head 8 via an ink ribbon 11 by a platen 9. Plural colors are formed lengthwise on the ink ribbon 11. A microprocessor 6 extracts a color signal selectively from the picture memories 5a-5d and drives a recording circuit so as to make the color coincident with the corresponding color of the ink ribbon. Since the ink ribbon is consumed on a region of one ink color in this way, the utilizing efficiency of the ink ribbon is improved.
