NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (either one of R1 and R2 is 1-9C straight-chain alkyl, and the other is F or Cl). EXAMPLE:The compound expressed by formula VII. USE:A tolan based nematic liquid crystal compound useful as an electrooptical display material. PREPARATION:A 4-n-alkylbiphenyl or 4-halophenyl is reacted with a compound expressed by formula II and anhydrous aluminum chloride to give a compound expressed by formula III, which is then reduced to afford a compound expressed by formula IV. The resultant compound expressed by formula IV is dehydrated to give a compound expressed by formula V, and bromine is added thereto to afford a compound expressed by formula VI, which is then reacted with a base, e.g. 1,5-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecene-5, to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
