NEW MATERIAL:An anthracyclin, N-formylcarminomycin of formula I . It has following properties: appearance; reddish orange powder; elementary analyses (%): C 59.89, H 5.02, N 2.59, O 32.50; Molecular weight: 541.5; melting point: 180- 185 deg.C; specific rotatory power; [alpha]D<20>=+250 deg. (C=0.1 in methanol); solubility: soluble in methanol, acetone, chloroform, hard soluble in ethyl acetate, benzene and water, insoluble in hexane, petroleum ether. USE:Antitumor agent with low toxicity. PREPARATION:Carminomycin I of formula II is formylated with a reagent such as formic acid to give the compound of formula I .
