PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON FIBER

摘要

PURPOSE:Pitch is melt-extruded into fibers and they are subjected to the first heat treatment in an oxidative atmosphere, then the second heat treatment in an inert atmosphere to cause carbonization and activate the surfaces whereby the titled fiber of large specific surface area are produced, which can be used for air cleaners. CONSTITUTION:Pitch is melt-extruded into fibers and they are subjected to the first-stage heat treatment in an oxidative atmosphere until the oxygen content in the fibers reaches 10-25wt%. Then, the resultant fibers are subjected to the second-stage heat treatment in an inert atmosphere to activate the fiber surfaces. Further, it is desirable that the fibers are subjected to the third-stage heat treatment where they are heated in the presence of an active gas to activate the fiber surfaces.
