A unitary control system controls a plurality of individual digital control systems (10; 11; 12; 13) for fermenter units operating independently of each other in response to a multiplicity of measured variables representing the reaction rates and end products of each fermenter unit. The energy input quantities to each unit are controlled independently either locally or from a master control unit (20) to achieve optimum fermentation conditions. Each of the plurality of fermentation systems, running under widely varying reaction conditions, is operated to produce any selected microorganism under substantially differing, or substantially identical process reaction conditions. The individual fermenter control system (10; 11; 12; 13) includes an executive program using a high speed microprocessor bus (44) for operating data storage, program storage and signal processing and an application program using a low speed input and output bus (42) for continuously monitoring and transmitting measured condition data and end effector control data on a sequential basis. Operator intervention for modifying program values or end effector operation without system upset is provided to both the local, microprocessor computer and the central, minicomputer controller.
|
