A mattress or similar article includes springs housed in ribbon-shaped members. which form a series of pockets for receiving the springs and are closed at each end to secure the springs in the pockets. Several ribbonshaped members are placed side-by-side and two ribbonshaped flexible layers are connected to opposite sides of the members and glued. to said members to join them together. Single ribbon-shaped members or groups of adjacent ribbon shaped members differ from contiguous members or groups of contiguous members in terms of their elasticity (in addition to the distance separating contiguous members) to impart to the manufactured article differing characteristics in a direction at right angles to that of the members side-by-side.
