An apparatus for protecting a pickup tube in a television camera has an iris (3) for controlling an amount of incident light upon the pickup tube (6) both in an automatic control mode and in a manual control mode by selectively actuating a mode selection switch (11). An additional switch (14) is connected in parallel with the mode selection switch (11), and when a main power switch is switched off the additional switch (14) is closed for a given time period during which the iris is driven into its minimum aperture state.
